Turquoise ground Rose-Famille Chinese large porcelain vase with six character red Qianlong mark. Hand carved and hand painted with many beautiful colors. The vase depicts bats and two dogs. Dark orange in color. Condition is very good. One side of the lid has darkened areas. No chips or hairlines. Rim under the lid is bright white. The inside is clean. Size: 33.5 x 24cm. (12 1/2 x 9). Auctions is pleased to offer a gorgeous contemporary Chinese turquoise Peking glass “lantern-form” vase. Chinese Peking (Tao Lio Ping) glass or Overlay Carved Glass is a traditional technique produced through a unique process of combining hand blowing, carving and dipping to produce the final form. Objects, usually vessels, are hand blown to their desired shape, carved and then dipped into molten glass, each layer added after the previous one has cooled. Typically, this can be seen by looking at the rings around the rim of the object. Oftentimes, artisans would carve into the layers using lapidary tools to create scenic designs and elaborate motifs. Aficionados with modern tastes prefer the glass without carving and appreciate the simple beauty of its form and color. It is a lengthy and tedious process that is time consuming and labor intensive. However, the result is exquisite and exotic, and quite unlike carved glass from other countries. Bright colors, such as green, orange, yellow and blue, are usually found in overlay glass. This highly unusual and absolutely stunning “lantern-form” vase is made of turquoise colored glass. The name turquoise is derived from the French. Meaning Turkish stone, because the trade routes that brought turquoise to Europe from the mines in central Asia went through Turkey along the famed “Silk Road”. In China, the color is rich in symbolism. For example, Buddhist rosaries are sometimes made entirely of turquoise, as a symbol long life. Lanterns also symbolize Chinese history and culture. They originated during the Eastern Han Dynasty, when. The Emperor Liu Zhuang ordered the inhabitants of the imperial palace and citizens to light lanterns just as the monks used lanterns on the twelfth day of the first lunar month in their worship of the Buddha.
