This store is where an old collector of Chinese paintings and porcelain offers for sale items that he finds interesting, beautiful and thought-provoking. This extraordinary vase illustrates the earliest Qing Dynasty experimentation with European opaque enamels (falangcai) which would turn into the long line of Famille Rose porcelain. The painting style continues that of the Kangxi Famille Verte while integrating new colors, most notably pink. Rather unusual are two long inscriptions in elegant calligraphy and individual painters’ signatures in the six large medallions depicting beautiful figures evoking taoist sages. Magnification shows light crazing in some pink and yellow areas, which is typical of early falangcai, when controlling kiln temperatures was still difficult. Falangcai glazing was initiated during the last decade of the Kangxi reign in the Imperial court’s own studio and kiln with the help of newly arrived European Jesuits. The unpainted biscuit was supplied by the Jingdezhen Imperial potters. Height: 59.5 cm. Largest width: 28 cm. Top width: 20.5 cm. Base width: 20.5 cm.
