Brief description of the artist : Zhang Zhitan, also known as Zhai and Yitao, Joined Yu Linqing’s Hongdain in Jingdezhen in 1901 to learn How to paint pastels. Later, he was hired by Yuan Qiufang, a senior official, to Nanchang to paint porcelain. As a result, he was able to see Koro prints of paintings of song and Yuan Dynasties. His skills were greatly improved. He is good at mountains and rivers. In his early years, he used to refer to the color porcelain of song and Yuan paintings, with Meticulous Brushwork and careful composition. In 1935, he joined Fuliang ceramics vocational school as a decoration porcelain teacher. From 1937 to 1944, he created a lot of works, mainly landscapes and porcelain plates. In the 1940′s influenced by Lang shining’s paintings he painted a large number of steeds with vivid images and gestures. After 1945 he successively taught in Jiangxi provincial ceramics college and Jingdezhen ceramics college.
