LARGE CHINESE PORCELAIN FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER JAR & COVER. Qing Dynasty / Republic Period. Monumental antique hand painted porcelain baluster jar and cover. Spectacular polychrome imagery, depicting three beautiful courtesans and a young imperial child riding upon a wild Qilin, the mythical beast which was often depicted as bearing a new baby. Rare and auspicious scenery which is quite spectacular, with bold colors and intricate detail. All set off upon a sublime white porcelain ground. The jar is of significant size, measuring approximately 16 inches tall. Makes quite a statement from all the way across the room. When one comes closer, the minute details begin to reveal themselves. Lovely silken gowns, long fans, the child’s ruyi scepter, the Qilin’s swirling tail, whiskers and individual strands of fur, brocades and ribbons, blossoming trees. Too much to list… See photos for all of the fabulous detail. The body of the vase is of handsome form with high rounded shoulders and a slender waist. It is surmounted by a domed cover and round finial. Both the cover and the reverse of the vase bear lengthy calligraphic inscriptions. Bold, vibrant, and tasteful in the traditional Chinese aesthetic. I n handsome antique condition with wear and some chipping (on the lid only) commensurate with age. We find this adds to the character and does not detract from the overall elegance of the piece. If used without the lid, it would make a stunning vase. We have elected not to clean it, as some collectors prefer this patina. Dates to the late Qing Dynasty or Republic Period. A striking centerpiece for the connoisseur of Chinese antiques and fine Asian porcelain. See 12 photos above left. VIEW OUR OTHER ANTIQUE TREASURES & OFFERINGS HERE.
