I have listed for your perusal a really fine piece of Chinese antiquity in the form of a late 19th century Qing period Chinese/Cantonese Decorated & Lacquered Rice/Grain Storage Barrel. This form of storage barrel was common place in Hong Kong & Canton during the 19th century on board most Chinese Junks, basically they were used for the safe stowage of mostly rice but sometimes different grains eaten by the boatman on board the boats. The idea was to keep the contents from being eaten and spoiled by rodents of which all the boats were plagued by. A lot of the barrels were also used on land in kitchens for the very same purpose. This particular barrel is quite large compared to most, it is hand built the same way as a normal wood barrel would be made, and the decorated with High Court Figures, Birds and sometimes Chinese text which this barrel has and finished with a water proofing coat of lacquer, with a rudimentary lid, which could used as a seat. Condition is pretty good apart from normal wear you would expect regarding its age, the lacquer is wearing thin, although the original decoration is still all there. The bottom twisted wire ring band has come loose but is still present inside the barrel and can be re-fixed. The barrel is quite large and stands 18.5″/46cm tall and is 13″/33cm at its Widest.
