The body has profuse wirework detail infilled with colourful glazed enamels in a very attractive design of Lotus flowers and scrolls all within Ruyi and pendant borders. This is a most skilled, worked piece with a great shape and lovely shades. The urn is in excellent condition overall save for a very slight indentation to the edge of the lid seen best in photo 8. Large (appx 14×10, 8 lb 6 oz) bronze champleve vase. As you know, the’champleve’ technique consists of casting or cutting the areas to be filled with melted glass (enamel) into the piece itself, as compared to cloisonne, where the enclosures for the enamel are attached to the surface of the underlying piece. Each technique has an appeal of its own. With heavy bronze pieces like this, the large areas of bronze decorated only with the cast design itself contrast nicely with the enameled designs of quite a different character.
