SPECTACULAR ANTIQUE CHINESE PORCELAIN SANG DE BOEUF VASE. Exquisite example of Chinese deep red sang de boeuf glazework. Of strong and handsome bottle form, with the pear shaped body rising to a cylindrical neck and wide flared mouth. The side bears a highly artistic splash of white, adding magnificent interest to the piece. The combination of the well balanced form, brilliant coloration, and bold detail is rarely seen and most impressive. Makes quite a statement from all the way across the room. The widely flaring mouth is subtly stunning in its own right, with the vibrant berry red encircling the opening and washing down the interior, the rim’s edge banded round with white, resembling a glowing halo. The body of the vase exhibits beautiful age-related iridescence if held at the right angle in the light. Further, there is gentle crazing to areas of the glaze surface. The vase is of significant size, measuring approximately 13 inches tall, and stands upon a raised foot that exhibits a burnt orange ground inside the footring, typical of the early Qing period. The foot ring itself displays very old chipping from the time of firing, seen on early oxblood glazes, as they tended to run and stick to the kiln. We find this does not detract from the overall magnificence of the vase since it is on the underside, and would be completely invisible when displayed in the right stand. This allows for the rare opportunity to obtain a magnificent early vase at a fraction of the cost of similar examples, some of which sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. The example herein listed superbly represents the epitome of the Chinese aesthetic of nobility. Natural, elegant presence exhibiting strength and harmony. If only this tasteful piece could tell of the gatherings it quietly witnessed. A beautiful example of Asian life and expression, and an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of Chinese art and antiques. See 12 photos above left.
