Item : Antique CHINESE 18th Century MARTABAN Stoneware Brown Glaze STORAGE JAR. Date: Antique circa 18th Century – precise date unknown. Size: 28cm x 28cm – 11inch x 11inch. Weight: 3+Kg – 6.7lbs. Additional Information : Martaban glazed stoneware were usually imported. They were originally stoneware made in Southern China from at least the Han dynasty period (206 BCE – 220 CE), but in later centuries also included stoneware made in Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and island Southeast Asia itself by natives and Chinese migrants. The name martaban is from the port city of Martaban (modern Mottama, Myanmar) an important trading port in the Maritime Silk Road. They also became highly valued as trade goods themselves by natives, even more so than the more elaborate porcelain favored by European traders. Condition : Antique circa 18th Century – precise date unknown. Small chips to rim, imperfections/marks/wear consistent with use/storage jars of this age.
