Large Antique (Republic-19th C) Qing period Oxblood/Sang de Boeuf Baluster Vase

This is a beautifully presented large vase, which we have tentatively identified to be dating from the mid-late 19th century, or possibly early twentieth century; i. Late Qing Dynasty or, perhaps, early Republic Period. It is an example of Oxblood or, in French,’Sang de Boeuf’ glazed pottery; a deep, rich blood-red copper-oxide glaze which started to be used in Chinese pottery at the start of the 18th century. The beautiful deep red glaze in this example graduates out at the neck into a lovely cream-crackle glaze; the base has this same finish, and has been hand-trimmed. As is typical of Sang de Boeuf, the rich, deep, opaque glaze here has an all-over subtle orange-peel appearance with an underlying crackle, which is only visible very close-up. The only issue to report regarding condition is the unfortunate drill-hole in the base, which you will be able to see clearly in the photos. It is a large and striking piece; standing approximately 33.3 cm (13 1/8 “) in height and approximately 12.7 cm (5 “) in diameter at the widest point. It weighs approximately 1.9 kg (4 1/4 lb). All Items are as described- researched, attributed and correct to the best of our ability. Any faults will be clearly highlighted, measured and photographed.
