Large Chinese Vase

Beautiful jar with fine hand painted scene of children playing near a colorful tree and a small dog near by. The jar is on a wood stand. The wood stand is not included.

Large Qianlong Marked Famille Successful Sons/ Boys Playing Covered Jar with pair of pink elephant head handles on each side. While the decoration may look like children playing, it is in fact filled with symbolic meaning. The top cover shows the five boys representing the sons of Dou Yujun all of whom reached phenomenal success in their respective career. They were known as the “five dragons”. The boy holding a ruyi scepter represents “as you desire” and a wish that all your desires come true. The boy holding a spear called a ji is a homophone for grade, referring to the grades in the imperial exams. The spear tied with a ribbon representing the wish that generations of the family celebrate success also in the imperial exams. The vase with stalk of grains and a lantern as being carried by the other boys form the elements of the rebus heping dengke which is a desire for peaceful ascendency in one’s official career. The lantern represents abundance and the tree fruit branches represent longevity, blessings and abundance of sons. There’s total of 12 boys in the body of the jar which possibly represent the 6 grandchildren of the five sons. Mark: Apocryphal 6 characters red Qianlong mark on the botton base. Size: Approximately 9 inches high x 7.5 inches in diameter. Condition: Good used condition with normal wear and tear. No major damage aside from very small flakes or tiny chips on the edges top rim please see pictures. Not noticeable in my opinion and only mentioned for accuracy. Return is allowed only if we misrepresented the item in our store description or if we missed to inform any major damage to the item. A large imposing Blue and White Vase baluster vase beautifully decorated with traditional Chinese imagery. From the rim, the neck is decorated with an attractive floral scroll. Below that is a band containing cartouches containing what is probably Hibiscus. Each cartouche interspersed with ruyi heads. The central motif contains cloud motifs, mountains with images of pines. Boys are shown at play within a walled garden siktting. Each segment of the wall again containing ruyi heads. The garden also has plantains and rocks with fungi growth. The boys are depicted engaged in different activities including playing with sticks , pulling model house. (probably) playing with paper objects , riding a child’s toy horse , playing a game at a table holding a vase (ping , a pun for peace)playing with a traditional fan(a symbol of goodness and used by the gods to ward away evil) and being along in a cart. Bottom band decorated with ruyi heads. Boys typify the Chinese desire for many sons who will pass the civil service examinations with high honours. Clouds represent both the heavens and their fraternal twin “good fortune” and “may all your wishes come true”. The ruyi (sceptre)heads are believed to wish to grant because, over time, the head of ruyi came to resemble lingzhi fungus, colloquially, may all your wishes come true. Because it is evergreen, is regarded by the Chinese, as an emblem of longevity. Unlike most other trees it does not wither in winter and used to symbolize friends who remain constant in adversity.
