This is a large vintage Chinese Imari vase. All hand enameled porcelain in orange, blue, and gold over a cream crackle glazed background. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR PHOTOS. This is a wonderful Chinese porcelain large mug or tankard with hand painted decoration known as Chinese Imari. This piece dates from the late Kangxi period, around 1720 or so and is a rare surviving example of a special order (chine de commande) from Europe. I have never in all my years of dealing seen a tankard with a lid with this type of fixing. The shape of the tankard is based on English silver of the period. It has its original lid which was fastened with 2 porcelain loops. One loop is still on the tankard and one has broken off and the other loop on the lid has also broken off, hardly surprising for an item 300 years old. No other major problems. There is a good amount of original gilding, no hairlines, but there is loss to the glaze on the handle. There is a small chip on the lid rim. Measurement: about 8 7/8″ Cross the top and 4 3/8″ in height. Condition: Perfect except a manufacture defect in the middle of the bowl and paint loss to the rim. I offer on return listing. Thank you for watching and interesting. “Chinese Imari” is a decoration style with predominantly a dry iron red enamel highlighted with gilt applied on underglaze blue and white porcelain. Its immediate source of inspiration is the Japanese aka-e. (red painting) but could be traced back to the Chinese Wanli wucai. This Imari style was very successful in Europe. After the Chinese porcelain trade reopened for large-scale export, they copied the Japanese “red” design to become one distinct export family of it self. Often combined with Batavia. Brown glaze and quite popular with the Dutch merchants. As a general rule the Chinese Imari pieces are more finely potted, have a thinner and more even glaze then the Japanese. The red enamels are as a general rule thinner and more translucent then the Japanese who tends to be of a fuller more dark red. The underglaze blue is generally more bright and clear then the Japanese.
