Large Chinese Vase

A rare pair of large Chinese “Ge” glazed famille rose figural vase, Daoguang period, 19th century. This pair of large vases feature in a crackle ware foundation decorated with warriors atop of horseback along hillside backdrops, flanked on either side with stationary foo dog ring handles. Dimension: 23.5 in. (59.7 x 27.9 cm); in good condition. Provenance: From the Collection of Tyen (Iconic Photographer).

Height: 25.5 in. (64.8 cm); width: 9.5 in. (24.1 cm); one of the Phoenix’s wing had a small repair; otherwise in good condition.

Covered with an unctuous black glaze, paling to an ochre tone below the mouth rim, thickening and stopping unevenly above the foot. Large and beautiful antique Chinese black/brown glazed bottle vase, the ovoid body with a tall cylindrical neck where the glaze lightens to a brown colour at the top, raised on a wood stand. 33cm without stand, 38cm with stand. There is a firing dimple on the neck, the glaze is uneven at the footrim which has a chip, there are a handle of light surface scratches otherwise very good condition. Large Antique Chinese Blue and White’Bogu’ Vase Daoguang Period 19th C. Private New York City collection. Originally bogu meant an inventory of antiquities. In the Song Dynasty (9601279AD), the wealthy created real shelves to display their curiosities and antiquities and called them bogujia, or bogu shelves. This led to artists using the motif in carvings, paintings, and in this case ceramic decorations. Think of them as representations of cabinets of curiosities as we say in English. Thats why a bogu always has a frame around it: its meant to symbolize a cabinet. How this works is ingenuous. Each object has a name, of course. And each name is a homonym for something else. For example a vase in Chinese is called ping, which sounds like ping (different character but the same sound) meaning peace. Hence a vase is a symbol of peace. A magnificent and large Famille Rose Vase. 40% larger than the referenced 10″ vases from Sotheby’s & Bonhams, this impressive 14.5″ piece is in Daoguang style with an apocryphal Jiaqing mark in iron red. I inherited this from my grandmother, who inherited it from her grandfather. While there is a Jiaqing symbol, it appears to be a clear example of Daoguang reign style. The price reflects the fact that it is Jiaqing seal from Daoguang reign, and thus not marked with the proper period in which it was made. It is, however, a larger piece, and nicer display piece because of it. With the bigger size comes a more globular shape and thus larger canvas to admire the intricate and delicate detailing. Is beautifully enameled with a background of white, decorated with colors of dark green, willow green, plum, purple, aqua blue, iron red, and royal blue. Depicts various mandarin figures and symbols on the decorative main reserves. Has a decorative border below the rim and the same pattern on the middle area and above the raised bottom rim. Has a large flared top- inside top is glazed in aqua. Has a raised bottom rim and unglazed underside bottom. Has the cheop mark, or the archaic seal or reign mark of the Daoguang Period (1821- 1850) in under glaze iron red on the side of the vase. Dimensions: 20.5 In. Tall x 11.3 In. The estimated date is Daoguang, circa 1821-50.
