We collected Cloisonne for many years, and never saw another piece similar to this. The underlying brass base is heavy, and the design is raised. Each fish is rounded, and stands out from the background. Same with the waves and the seaweed to a lesser extent, so that the effect is three dimensional. See closeup picture #10. I don’t know if the 3-D is in the brass base or in varying thickness of the cloisons and the enamel. I have seen pieces with much thinner brass where raised areas were impressed into the sheet metal here and there but nothing like this. There are a few bruises in the enamel, but none I found seem to go all the way to the brass. See picture # 9. If it were more recent, it would not be so rare.
