Auctions is pleased to offer an authentic Chinese Cultural Revolution Blue and White Wares Vase. During the Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution of 19661976, works of art were expected to foment revolution – and under enormous pressure from guidelines of the Central Cultural Revolution Group, led by Mao’s fourth wife Jiang Qing – in her words, were to be “red, bright, and shining” (hong, guang, liang), like Jiang Qing’s own revolutionary operas. The glorious history of Chinese ceramics, that most Chinese of art forms, was no exception, with brightly colored teapots and ginger jars along with countless other traditional porcelain items conforming to the new aesthetic guidelines. However, by the time this stunningly beautiful vase was made in 1975, it was obvious the revolution had failed, and instead it served as an elegiac homage to Mao while embracing the most famous of all Chinese ceramics, namely “blue and white wares”, which dominated the world of porcelain from the Ming Dynasty up until the beginning of the 20th century. It is beautifully shaped in baluster form, with very broad shoulders perhaps as a salute to the worker of the. Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. And is decorated with traditional Chinese landscape imagery featuring birds, flowers and trees. The reverse of the vase also includes an in the glaze “ghost” silhouette of Mao, together with Chinese script, which has proved impossible to photograph. Manufacturing companies still had to conform to the official guidelines, but had by this time found subtle ways of resisting the party line. Hence, Mao depicted ghost-like on the back of a vase. It measures 13.5 inches in diameter by 21.5 inches in height (34.2 cm by 54.6 cm). It is dated 1975 on the bottom. An important and authentic, it shows wear consistent with the dating, including tiny scratches and rubbing, but generally is in very good condition. Guaranteed authentic, it would make a fine collectors piece for anyone involved in Chinese porcelain or artifacts from the Cultural Revolution.
