We bought this from a good friend, an importer of Chinese goods, both antique and modern, with whom Neta dealt extensively when she had her large antiques store. We have displayed it for the last 20 years at home. I do not have the notes at the time we bought it, and I do not remember the age. We had not seen the like before. It is large at almost 2 feet and about 13 wide. It is a fired highly glazed clay. It is an impressive and masterfully sculpted piece of art. The glazed background is crazed, but the glazing on the raised figures is not. 3 of the dragon heads are raised from the surface of the vase variously from 1″ to 1.5″ and there are several other sections – of the dragons’ bodies, the flaming pearl, the sharp dorsal scales and claws of the dragons, which are raised from a quarter inch to one inch from the surface. From the inside neck and from some irregularities on the surface, it looks like this vase was molded by hand and not made on a wheel (pictures 9, 10, 11). The raised designs are all added after the vase was made, of course, and glazed and fired again later. There is a molded design around the base. Some of the colors and some of the figures look like Shiwan ware, but that is an opinion, not a representation. I cannot read the inscription or the impressed mark in the unglazed interior of the neck (unless “6″ means “6″). The ground color is a light celadon, and the other colors are accurately shown in the pictures. They come across pastel as opposed to primary. An impressive and unique (at least to me) piece.
